The Mission Viejo High School Football Team on Saturday raised roughly $13,000 to support its booster program and the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation during its 5K run/walk event at the Great Parks Neighborhood in Irvine.
The event, which attracted roughly 200 participants, is part of the football team’s “On a Mission to Find a Cure” program. The team recently adopted the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation in an effort to raise awareness of the importance for pediatric cancer research.
The players’ involvement in the worthy cause was also born out of support for fellow student and cancer survivor, Samantha Weiner. Weiner, 17, beat the cancer she was diagnosed with at 18 months, but the treatment took a mental and physical toll and she requires around-the-clock special care for daily activities. Weiner attends the Special Education program at Mission Viejo High School. The football team adopted her as its “angel” and continues to work to raise awareness and funds through its “On a Mission to Find a Cure” program.
